This year our service for the World Day of Prayer will take place via Zoom. on Friday 5th March. It is entitled “Build on a Strong Foundation” and has been prepared by members of the different denominations and islands of Vanuatu.
Vanuatu is in the South Pacific tropical cyclone zone and Cyclone Pam caused great devastation in 2015 and then Cyclone Harold destroyed everything in its path in April 2020.
This artwork is by Juliette Pita, currently the most well-known artist in Vanuatu. It is entitled “Cyclone Pam II: 13th March 2015. It was inspired by the artist’s own experience during one of the most intense and destructive tropical storms to hit Vanuatu. A mother, wearing the tradition dress of Erromango Island, is bending and praying over her child as the waves crash over her. The palm tree leans protectively over them, its strong roots enabling it to withstand the furious wind. The small crosses on the horizon commemorate those who died.
Today we share in the prayers that these confident and purposeful women have written and pray also for the needs of Vanuatu.
